The SIS30321 Certificate III in Fitness is the entry qualification for working in an Australian gym or fitness centre. It is the starting point most people take, and the one employers ask for first.
What the qualification covers
The course builds the foundation you need to work safely with clients. You learn how the body responds to exercise, how to screen a client before training them, how to program and instruct a session, and how to keep everyone safe while they train.
- Anatomy and physiology, and what it means in practice
- Client screening and pre-exercise assessment
- Programming and instructing gym-based sessions
- Group fitness instruction
- Workplace health and safety
- Providing healthy eating information within your scope
Who it is for
Most students arrive from one of three places: leaving school and wanting a trade, changing careers from an office role, or already training in a gym and wanting to be paid for it. You do not need prior fitness experience. You do need to be comfortable working with people and able to complete the practical assessment components.
What it leads to
Graduates typically work as gym instructors, group fitness instructors, or fitness assistants. It also satisfies the entry requirement for the SIS40221 Certificate IV in Fitness, which is the personal training qualification. Many students complete both.
Delivery and assessment
The college delivers this qualification with flexible online study and practical assessment arranged in person. You work through the theory at your own pace with tutor support by phone and email, then complete the practical components with an assessor.
Entry requirements
There are no formal academic prerequisites. You will need basic language, literacy and numeracy skills, a Unique Student Identifier, and the ability to complete the physical components of the assessment.
