Recognition of Prior Learning
Your experience already counts. Many professionals possess valuable skills and knowledge gained through years of work, volunteer roles, or life experiences that align with formal qualifications. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) acknowledges this expertise, potentially reducing your study time and accelerating your career progression.
We understand that learning happens everywhere—not just in traditional classrooms. Our RPL process evaluates your existing competencies against nationally recognised training standards, creating pathways for experienced professionals to formalise their skills efficiently.
What Is Recognition of Prior Learning?
RPL acknowledges skills and knowledge obtained through prior formal learning and experiences achieved outside traditional education systems. This includes:
- Paid employment in relevant industries
- Volunteer work and community involvement
- Skills developed through leisure pursuits or hobbies
- Hands-on practical abilities and natural aptitudes
- Previous training or professional development

How Our RPL Process Works
Initial Assessment
We begin by reviewing which qualifications we offer align with your experience. The College of Health and Fitness can only grant RPL for certificates within our scope of registration as RTO 30798. Contact our team at enquiries@cohaf.edu.au or call 07 3385 0195 to discuss whether your background matches our available qualifications.
Evidence Submission
You’ll compile documentation demonstrating your competency in relevant Units of Competency. Evidence may include:
- Position descriptions and employment contracts
- Training records and certificates
- Professional references from employers
- Awards, achievements, or recognition
- Work samples or portfolio materials
- Documented volunteer roles
Our assessors guide you through identifying appropriate evidence. Each qualification contains multiple UoCs, and you’ll need to demonstrate competency across all required units to receive certification.
Professional Assessment
We assign a qualified assessor to work through your submission systematically.
This professional reviews your evidence against the specific competency requirements for each UoC. Assessment workload equals that of evaluating full qualification completion, requiring significant expertise and time investment.
Your assessor identifies gaps between submitted evidence and required competencies, then communicates clearly about addressing these gaps. Additional evidence submissions may be requested, or you might participate in interviews or practical demonstrations.
Final Review & Outcomes
After you’ve provided all available evidence, your assessor completes a final review. This decision details which UoCs you’ve been deemed competent in based on the evidence supplied.
You receive a Statement of Attainment for each UoC successfully granted through RPL. When RPL covers all UoCs within a certificate—or when combined with Credit Transfer—you’re awarded the full qualification.
Credit Transfer Opportunities
Credit Transfer (CT) differs from RPL. CT applies when you’ve completed an exact matching UoC in previous formal study. Each UoC has a specific code and title, such as “HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation.”
If you’ve successfully completed this identical UoC previously, you receive automatic CT without reassessment. This applies only to exact matches where the original UoC remains current and hasn’t been superseded or recalled. We provide CT at no additional cost.
Investment & Timeframes
Our RPL assessment process requires substantial professional expertise. The assessment fee is $750, covering the comprehensive evaluation of your evidence by qualified assessors. This investment reflects the significant time and expertise required to assess whether your experience meets national competency standards.
This fee covers the assessment process itself. It doesn’t guarantee qualification award, as outcomes depend on whether your evidence demonstrates required competencies. You may need additional study for units where competency cannot be established through RPL.
Allow approximately one month for your RPL assessment to be finalised. This includes time for evidence review, assessor feedback, additional submissions, and final decision-making. Complex applications or qualifications with numerous UoCs may require additional time.
Completing Your Qualification
For UoCs where RPL cannot be granted, you have options. Many students choose to enrol in specific units with us to complete their qualification. We charge $75 per UoC for this targeted study approach.
This pathway combines your existing expertise with focused learning in areas where competency gaps exist. It’s often significantly faster and more affordable than completing an entire qualification from scratch.

Understanding Units of Competency
Australian qualifications consist of multiple Units of Competency, each defining specific skills and knowledge requirements. The number of units varies between certificates. You can research specific UoC details at training.gov.au, the government website containing information on formalised education throughout Australia.
Understanding the scope of each UoC helps you prepare appropriate evidence. Some units focus on practical skills, others on theoretical knowledge, and many combine both elements. Our assessors help you understand what’s required for each relevant unit.
Who Benefits from RPL?
RPL particularly suits professionals with substantial industry experience who lack formal qualifications. We regularly work with:
- Fitness instructors transitioning to personal training
- Health workers seeking administrative credentials
- Business professionals formalising management skills
- Sports coaches pursuing recognised qualifications
- Nutrition enthusiasts becoming professional consultants
Many people have developed impressive competencies through years of practical work. RPL creates pathways to formal recognition without repeating learning they’ve already mastered through experience.
Our Commitment to Your Success
At COHAF, our RPL process combines rigorous assessment standards with supportive guidance. Our qualified assessors understand the value of experience-based learning and work collaboratively to help you present your strongest evidence.
We maintain transparent communication throughout the process. Questions and concerns are welcomed at any stage. Our team at our North Lakes facility provides ongoing support, ensuring you understand requirements and expectations clearly.
The assessment workload matches that of evaluating full qualification completion. Our assessors invest significant time reviewing evidence, identifying gaps, providing feedback, and conducting final reviews. This thoroughness ensures credentials awarded through RPL meet the same national standards as traditional study pathways.
Important Considerations
Several factors influence RPL success. Evidence quality matters significantly—detailed documentation demonstrating competency performs better than vague descriptions. Current experience typically provides stronger evidence than older roles, particularly in rapidly evolving fields.
The breadth of your experience affects outcomes. Some UoCs require specific technical skills or knowledge that may not have been part of your work role. Others require demonstrated competency across varied contexts or populations.
Not every application results in full qualification award through RPL alone. Many students successfully gain RPL for some units while completing targeted study for others. This combination approach remains considerably more efficient than starting from scratch.
Starting Your RPL Journey
We welcome conversations with professionals considering RPL. Initial discussions help determine whether your experience aligns with our qualifications and whether RPL represents your best pathway forward.
