Certificate IV in Fitness (SIS40221): The Personal Training Qualification

The SIS40221 Certificate IV in Fitness is the qualification that lets you work as a personal trainer in Australia. Where the Certificate III qualifies you to instruct in a gym, the Certificate IV qualifies you to design and deliver individual programs, and to work with clients on their own terms.

The difference from the Certificate III

The SIS30321 Certificate III in Fitness teaches you to instruct. The Certificate IV teaches you to assess, program and manage a client relationship over time. That includes conducting a full fitness assessment, designing a program against a client’s goals and constraints, monitoring progress and adjusting, and understanding when a client needs to be referred to another professional.

What you learn

  • Comprehensive fitness assessment and screening
  • Designing individualised exercise programs
  • Programming for strength, endurance and body composition
  • Nutritional advice within a personal trainer’s scope
  • Behaviour change and client motivation
  • Managing a personal training business, including pricing and record keeping
  • Working with clients who have specific needs or health conditions

Career outcomes

Graduates work as personal trainers — employed in a gym, contracted to a facility, or operating independently with their own client base. The business component of the qualification matters here: a significant part of the work is finding and retaining clients, and the course covers how to do that within a professional and legal framework.
