Fitness qualifications in Australia are stacked, which means each one builds on the last and lets you do more. Understanding the difference matters, because enrolling in the wrong level wastes both time and money.
Certificate III in Fitness (SIS30321)
The entry qualification. It prepares you to instruct individuals and groups in a gym setting, screen clients, and program and lead safe sessions. This is the qualification employers ask for when hiring gym instructors. See the SIS30321 Certificate III in Fitness page for details.
Certificate IV in Fitness (SIS40221)
The personal training qualification. It builds on the Certificate III and adds full fitness assessment, individual program design, nutrition advice within scope, and the business skills to run your own practice. See the SIS40221 Certificate IV in Fitness page.
What sits above and alongside these
Beyond the Certificate IV, the pathway continues into diploma-level study in sport, fitness and recreation, and into specialisations such as strength and conditioning. Those are separate qualifications with their own entry requirements, and are worth investigating once you have industry experience behind you.
Choosing the right entry point
- No fitness background, want to work in a gym — start with the Certificate III
- Already instructing, want your own clients — the Certificate IV
- Unsure whether the industry suits you — the Certificate III is the lower-commitment way to find out
Checking a qualification is current
Qualification codes change over time as training packages are updated. Every qualification has a code and a title on the national register, and a current code is the reliable way to check you are enrolling in the right thing. You can search any code on training.gov.au to see its status.
